This project is in honor of my sister Marie-Josée (MJ) who passed away in 2017 after losing her battle with depression and mental illness.
MJ was always sending postcards to her loved ones and never failed to find an excuse to send one from anywhere she was, even if it was just to say hi or tell us a funny story about her day. For this project I had people who love her write a postcard back to her to"wherever she is in the wider universe", as my dad wrote at the end of his postcard to her.
I also included a few photographs of her loved ones with objects that belonged to her. The photos were taken on 35mm film.
My dad holding a note written for MJ by my older brother around 10 years ago during a time when MJ was struggling. She later gave it to me when I was going through a rough patch as well. It reads:
“MJ’s strategy for success:
1. Know where you are
2. Accept where you are (no judging or comparing)
3. Move towards where you want to be, aka “jump!”(one step at a time!)
Love, Jordy”
Mark, MJ's partner, holding MJ's camera. She was a photographer and carried a camera around with her always. She labeled all of her photo equipment with "mj" and with polka dot tape (due to her unhealthy obsession with polka dots).
MJ's wife, Jade, wearing their wedding ring. Their wedding was of course polka dot themed.
